My sister:
Catherine Williams

My sister by Catherine Williams

32 years.

How is it possible that so much time has passed since you were so cruelly taken away from us?

I just know you would have loved social media. Back in 1990 and before, we had landline telephones, letters sent by post, emails and in person communication. This world has changed dramatically.

You never met your nephew and niece. I’m sad they missed out on knowing you. You would have been the best auntie to them and I’m sure you’d be as proud of them as I am. No doubt, you would also have become a mother yourself.

I often wonder how your life would have turned out. You gave so much to those in need and I know that your kindness and support were highly valued by the people you worked with especially Bobby and his family, Mr Nesbitt, and all those ‘women returners’ who benefitted from your guidance.

We’re going to the Isles of Scilly again in May. I’ve been remembering our family holidays there with great fondness.

Clambering over the rocks on Porthcressa; taking a long time to get in the sea because the water was SO cold (it still is btw!); walking along Harry’s Walls, or to the café in Old Town, and around the Garrison often seeing those Scilly Asses and going to the Kavorna for hot chocolate afterwards; visiting the ‘off islands’ and especially enjoying our trips to St Martin’s. Do you remember the time Dad sent us to get him a flask of tea from Mr Webb’s café? It was a bit stewed when we got back to our spot on the beach as the teabags had been left in! They were very happy times.

No matter how much time has passed, we love you and miss you. We have got on with our lives and know that you wouldn’t have wanted or expected anything less. But our world has been a poorer place without you in it.

No matter how much time has passed, the anniversary of your death is still a difficult day. You will be forever 23 years old.

I wish you could be here, dear Ruth. My sister.

Memories

Sometimes, when you lose someone, it can be hard to think back, even to the good times. Catherine’s beautiful, heartfelt tribute to her sister shows strength and offers us all a picture of a caring, loving relationship. For that, we can only say thank you.

Catherine is often immersed in stories and she knows better than most how to make them beautifully easy to read. Find out more about her design and production work at the Chapter One Book Design website.
