The humanoid was lost, lonely and feeling confused as to if it had made the right choice. Was moving half way across the world the right choice? How would it find a way to fit in in this foreign land?
Gently it explored the lands around its dwelling, venturing further and further into the unknown. Loneliness set in, the days began to have a heavier feel the longer it explored and tried to find a way to settle into this new foreign land.
A few weeks after arriving it was venturing up a street in a place that it had never visited before in its exploration and it came across a strange and odd establishment.
This location was filled with humanoids that spoke a language it understood...phrases like "In response....", "I roll a D20...", "Where are the paints?", "Tap this mana to get...", "These boardgames are more co-operative.." were all heard.
The humanoid was filled with hope and joy, but also a bit of fear and anxiety, would it be accepted into this place. It spoke a slightly different dialect, but the same language.
Tentatively it entered the space and as a few of those that were there looked up at it, it gently asked..."Is there space for one more? I don't have a deck with me."
The proprietor of the establishment stood up and came across to shake hands. "All are welcome here my friend, lets get you set up with a play-mat and a loan deck."
Sitting in that space, surrounded by its fellow geeks the humanoid for the very first time felt like this new land might just be home.
Many hours later, a sense of peace had descended and it was sure..yes, with this kind of community it might just have found home...
The story was inspired by Rory's struggles to settle and find friends after moving from SA to the UK. Those first few months were tough, once he found a group of geeks to hang out with and play Magic the Gathering and boardgames things got a whole load easier.
Sadly that shop closed down now, but the friendships remain to this day and they still hang out as often as life allows.
