The chocolate brownie called out to me.
Sat in the cafe, looking at the brownie sitting on the pristine white plate on the other side of the table, I struggled to not let my hand wander over and snatch it quickly.
After some consideration I decided I would treat myself and savour the warm cake.
Suddenly there was a commotion and I turned to look out of the window to see what all the noise was.
I turned back and the brownie had disappeared. I felt desolate. My mouth had been watering with anticipation.
Have you ever lost something you were really looking forward to?
It took me back to missing things going on with my teams because I was being distracted by peripheral things.
A timely reminder!
One of the questions we ask in the Puck Creations’ Defining Your Brand Workshop is where you want your business to be in 5, 10, 15 and 20 years from now. We don’t ask this to create a rigid destination but instead, to develop a guide and a prize. When you know where you want to be, you can focus in on it until you decide you want to be somewhere else or you reach your destination. If you don’t keep your eyes on the prize, you’ll miss your destination and won’t know where to go next.
Nicola’s chocolate brownie loss was a devastating moment and there was no alternative, all because she was focussing on the peripherals! It did generate a great story though and her big prize of empowering women leaders is still very much in her sights. See how she does it at The People Mentor.
