In the winter of 2011 a 4 word text swept me sideways.
About to present the opening address at a client event, I handed over my phone as a text flashed up from AMY my 18 year old daughter.
‘OMG Mummy I’m pregnant’
😲 My heart beat out of my chest, I couldn't breathe, there was a loud rushing noise in my head.
I stumbled through that 15 minute speech, saved only by autocue.
😦 All I could think was, this is bad news, VERY BAD NEWS.
This news shattered her plans.
All I could see was the potential for dark outcomes.
How WRONG I was.
Olly is the catalyst for sunshine in our family.
Yes, Olly's arrival changed everything, but Amy is HAPPY and he is THRIVING.
My point is not all bad news is actually BAD NEWS.
Silver linings emerge, growth happens and opportunities are revealed and sometimes MAGIC (like Olly) happens.
Yes times are very tough right now, but out of Bad, Good emerges.
We have to look for, and even fight for it, but it will be there 🌞
This lesson has saved me on several occasions since 2011 as other curve balls have crashed into our lives.
Is this a lesson you recognise?
It’s a hard lesson to recognise, isn’t it? Can good really come from something this bad? Whatever “this bad” is for you right now. As Elise says, you have to look for it and fight for it. Sometimes, you might not see it, even as it’s happening but often, there is good and knowing that can help us get through the bad.
Elise works with ambitious leaders to accelerate culture change in big businesses. That surely leads to some challenging moments but she offers support to make sure there’s always good at the end. See how at Nkuzi Change.
